Production: Powdered stevia leaf is produced from the dried foliage of an evergreen shrub related to the sunflower native to South America. In temperate regions, it can be grown as an annual or herbaceous perennial.
Qualities: Stevia leaves have a gentle licorice-like flavour and a sweetness that is said to be up to 200 times stronger than sugar. Research has shown that stevia, as a sweetener, does not contribute calories or carbohydrates to the diet and that it has no effect on blood glucose or insulin response. This means that it is an especially good alternative sweetener for people with diabetes or those who are wishing to reduce their caloric intake from sweeteners.
Common Use: Stevia is used as an alternative to sugar in beverages, baked goods, and many other foods. Because it is so much sweeter than sugar, only a very small amount is needed.

Production: Schisandra is native to Northern China, Russia, and parts of Korea. Aside from its medicinal applications, it is also grown as an ornamental vine due to its ability to grow upwards and display beautiful leaves and hanging bunches of bright red berries.
Qualities: Schisandra also known as “wu-wei-zi” (five flavour fruit) in China, usually has sour, sweet, bitter, warm, and salty taste notes and has been consumed for centuries as a tea to boost the mood and help with fatigue.
Common Use: To make a schisandra infusion in fruit juice, pour 1/2 a cup of berries into one gallon of a dark fruit juice and allow to soak for a day, then strain. It can also be added to teas, herbal brews (soft simmer) and is effective as a liquid herbal extract and herbal capsule. To make schisandra syrup, soak berries in vegetable glycerin for a month.

Production: The rose has been appreciated for its beauty and aroma for centuries. Rose petals destined for distillation or drying, are picked every day and by hand on the first morning when the flower opens, at or just before sunrise when the content of the volatile rose oils is highest.
Qualities: Dried rose petals are a great source of vitamin C and are a colourful, delicate addition to tea blends and potpourri mixes.
Common use: Dried rose petals can be infused to make rose water or oil, added to tea blends (try our Children’s tea, and herbal Nighttime tea), mixed with epsom salts makes for a relaxing bath. It can be found in many healing ointments or poultices, candied to decorate cakes, or used in a variety of cosmetics including facial cleansers and lotions.

Production: Lobelia is a small, low-growing plant in the bellflower family that produces vibrant purple-blue flowers. The aerial parts of the plant are traditionally used to combat inflammation of the skin and respiratory disorders. The herb is also a component of herbal smoking blends, as indicated by the common names Indian tobacco and asthma weed.
Qualities: Bitter and acrid due to the presence of carboxylic acids and piperidine alkaloids. Not recommended for culinary use.
Common Use: Infuse in oil or make strong water infusions for use in salves, lotions and other topical formulations. The herb may also be tinctured for external use. May induce vomiting if ingested, even in small amounts.

Production: Ginkgo is native to China and has been found in fossils dating its existence back over 270 million years. The unique fan-shaped leaves are harvested in the fall.
Qualities: The beautiful leaf of the ginkgo tree has a variety of uses in traditional medicine. Ginkgo improves blood flow to the brain and has antioxidant properties. Several studies have shown that ginkgo can help with memory problems, such as those caused by dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.
Common Use: Dried ginkgo leaf is commonly used to make tea or encapsulated. It has a bitter, refreshing taste, some have said it has a hint of sourness and sweetness.

Production: Calendula, also known as Marigold, is an annual herb with bright orange or yellow flowers which are harvested and dried after full bloom in summer.
Qualities: Calendula has been used for centuries to colour and spice foods (most commonly soups and butter) as well as a dye to colour textiles and hair. It is also well known as a soothing first aid remedy, used topically on burns, cuts and skin irritations, and used as an anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial tea, that is said to help treat urinary tract infections.
Common Use: The dried flower petals can be used on their own as a soothing herbal tea or in tea blends (Children’s tea, Herbal Nighttime tea), as an herbal compress, stored in vinegar or alcohol to create a tinctures, infused in oil which has many cosmetic uses, or mixed into homemade soaps, lotions, and salves.
Safety: People with allergies to other members of the Asteraceae family (ie. feverfew, chamomile, or echinacea) should exercise caution with calendula, as allergic cross-reactivity to Asteraceae plants is common.
