Black cohosh (Actaea racemose) is a woodland herb native to North America. The root is used as medicine and is often used for estrogen-related conditions. In some parts of the body, black cohosh might increase the effects of estrogen. In other parts of the body, black cohosh might decrease the effects of estrogen. Black cohosh should not be thought of as an “herbal estrogen” or a substitute for estrogen. People commonly use black cohosh for symptoms of menopause, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), painful menstruation, weak and brittle bones, and many other conditions, there is no good scientific evidence to support most of these uses. Don’t confuse black cohosh with blue cohosh or white cohosh. These are unrelated plants.

Production: After the ripe pod has been cut from the tree, it is opened, the rind discarded, and the pulp and seeds laid out for several days. During this time the pulp liquefies or “sweats” and fermentation starts, which softens the bitter taste and helps to unlock the full aroma of the cacao bean. This fermentation process is usually followed by gently roasting the beans to enhance the chocolate aroma. The beans are then crushed and their thin skins removed so that only pieces or “nibs” remain. Cacao nibs are then ground into a thick brown liquid called cacao paste (aka cacao mass or liquor) which is made up of cacao butter (55-60%) and suspended fine cacao particles. This cacao paste is subsequently pressed until it separates into cacao butter and a cacao “cake” which is then ground to produce cacao powder.Qualities: Cacao powder has the lowest fat content compared to all other cacao products. Cacao is believed to contain high amounts of antioxidants such as flavonoids, and many other nutrients and minerals like stearic and oleic fatty acid, anandamide (the bliss chemical), theobromine, manganese, zinc, copper, sulfur, PEA, and tryptophan. Properties: Dandelion is an edible perennial herb with deeply cut leaves, yellow flowers, and has a thick taproot which is dark brown on the outside and white on the inside. It is native to most of Europe, Northern Africa, and Asia, but now has naturalized all over the world alongside roads and in lawns as a common weed. It’s botanical name Taraxacum is derived from the Greek words ‘taraxos’ meaning disorder and ‘akos’ meaning remedy, referring to dandelion’s myriad of healing properties.
Qualities: There are medical references as early as the 10th century for the use of taraxcacum by Arabian physicians as a remedy for liver and kidney complaints and dandelion root is valued for the same reasons to this day. Studies have shown that dandelion stimulates bile flow and has a mild diuretic effect. According to some nutritional analysis, dandelion root contains substantial levels of vitamins A, C, D, B-complex, iron, magnesium, zinc, manganese, choline, calcium, boron, and a high amount of potassium.
Common Use: Roasting the root gives it a coffee-like taste. To make dandelion root coffee, carefully roast the cut root in a pan or oven or use 1 tsp of our roasted dandelion powder for 15 to 20 min, strain and add dairy or dairy alternatives, and sweeteners as desired.
For dandelion root tea, dissolve 1 tbsp of roasted dandelion root, 1 tsp of minced, fresh or dried ginger root, and one cardamom seed in two cups of water. Steep the mixture for 5 to 10 minutes, strain, add sweetener to taste, and enjoy! Dandelion root can also be blended into smoothies, mixed with juices, or sprinkled over cereal and oatmeal.

Production: Comfrey is a perennial herb with large, rough leaves and whitish pink bell-shaped flowers. The turnip-like root is black and deep growing.
Qualities: Comfrey root is said to have astringent, anti-inflammatory, demulcent and cell proliferating properties, and it has been traditionally used to heal wounds, cartilage, and bones. It has a high allantoin content which makes cells grow faster and promotes healing.
Common Use: Poultices can be made and applied topically on irritated skin, aching joints, burns, cuts, sprains, and to reduce swelling around fractures. Comfrey root can also be added to salves and lotions.
