Production: Hericium most often grows from the wood of dead or dying deciduous trees, often fallen oak, beech, or maple, from late summer to fall. It can be spotted on logs, on stumps, and sometimes in the wounds of living trees.
Qualities: Lion’s Mane is an edible mushroom known for its potential cognitive support, nervous system health benefits, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, digestive health support, immune system support, and potential as a nootropic.
Common Use: The most common method of consuming dried Lion’s Mane mushrooms is to make a tea. The tea can be prepared by simmering the mushroom in water for about three hours. Lion’s Mane can also be added to smoothies, and soups, which should be simmered for two to three hours as well.
In prepared dishes, they are most commonly used sparingly, as an accent, due to the strong, earthy flavour.
Storage: Store in a cool, dry, dark place in an airtight container. Refrigeration not required.
