What is Grape Root? (Mahonia aquifolium)
Native to western North America, Berberis aquifolium is known for its yellow roots, holly-like leaves, and tart, blue berries that resemble a cluster of grapes. Oregon grape is a member of the Berberidaceae family and its roots contain the chemical constituent berberine, thought to be responsible for many of the plant’s healthful benefits. A fine substitute for goldenseal, Oregon grape root can be extracted, added to herbal tea blends, and employed in topical care formulas.
Oregon grape is native to western North America and is particularly prominent in the Pacific Northwest as the name suggests. The Oregon grape is a bushy, flowering perennial with shiny, holly-like leaves. It is commonly found in mountainous regions and adapts easier to its environment than the closely related barberry.
The leaves of Oregon grape are dark green and prickly, turning orange and eventually brilliant red after a few years of aging. The plant reaches between two and six feet in height and produces small blackish-blue berries that resemble tiny grapes. These berries are edible but not palatable, possessing an intensely tart flavor that herbalist Michael Moore compares to sucking simultaneously on a Vitamin C tablet and aspirin. Other common names for Oregon grape include holly-leaf barberry, mountain grape, Oregon grapeholly, and Oregon barberry. Berberis may also be known by its botanical synonym Mahonia. It belongs to the Berberidaceae family.
The golden yellow root of Oregon grape is commonly harvested as a medicine, and is sometimes substituted for goldenseal, as the two herbs have similar constituent properties. Oregon grape has been clinically shown to support certain skin irritation when used externally. It is also traditionally used as a bitter tonic to stimulate digestion and externally for its antimicrobial properties. The active constituents in Oregon grape root have shown substantial antimicrobial and antifungal activity in vitro, though these activities are unproven in human trials.

Production: Elder is a flowering plant that is native to Europe, Northern Africa, and Western Asia. It produces large clusters of small, white flowers in the spring, followed by small blueish black (sometimes red) berries.
Qualities: Elderberries naturally contain vitamins A, B, and C, and they have a long history of use in traditional European medicine. The berries and flowers of the Elder plant are most commonly used to boost the immune system, improve heart health, treat coughs, and cold and flu symptoms.

Qualities: Epsom salts have been used as a calming, natural remedy for centuries. Epsom salt is not actually a salt, but a naturally occurring pure mineral compound of magnesium sulfate. It has an abundance of health benefits, as well as many cosmetics, gardening, and household uses.
Some of the benefits of Epsom salts include relaxing the nervous system, soothing inflammation, curing skin problems, easing strained muscles, healing cuts, soothing fibromyalgia pain, treating colds and congestion, and drawing toxins from the body. A common way to utilize the health benefits of Epsom salts is to dissolve the salts in a hot bath and soak for at least 12 minutes. Absorbed through the skin, replenishes magnesium in the body, which is drained by stress. The magnesium helps produce serotonin which elevated the mood and creates a feeling of calm. Magnesium also helps muscle and nerve functioning and helps prevent artery hardening. Sulfates help improve the absorption of nutrients, flush toxins, and ease migraine headaches.
Common Use: For an Epsom salt bath, add two cups of salts to a hot bath so that they dissolve, and soak in the bath for at least 12 minutes. For an even more relaxing, skin-softening, healing bath, try adding baking soda, peppermint, rose petals, chamomile, calendula, elderflower, lemon balm leaf, or other additions of your choosing.
Epsom salts make a lovely foot bath for sore or smelly feet and help to relieve symptoms of athlete’s foot. They can also be used to remove splinters by soaking the affected area to draw out the splinter.
To use topically to soothe cuts and skin soreness, mix a thick paste of Epsom salts and hot water and apply to the affected area. To exfoliate dead skin, mix with some olive oil or coconut oil and rub all over wet skin to exfoliate and soften.
As a household cleaner, Epsom salts can be made into a scrub when mixed with liquid dish detergent, and can also be used to remove build up in washing machines. They can be used to fertilize household plants and deter slugs in the garden.

Production: After the ripe pod has been cut from the tree, it is opened, the rind discarded, and the pulp and seeds laid out for several days. During this time the pulp liquefies or “sweats” and fermentation starts, which softens the bitter taste and helps to unlock the full aroma of the cacao bean. This fermentation process is usually followed by gently roasting the beans to enhance the chocolate aroma. The beans are then crushed and their thin skins removed so that only pieces or “nibs” remain. Cacao nibs are then ground into a thick brown liquid called cacao paste (aka cacao mass or liquor) which is made up of cacao butter (55-60%) and suspended fine cacao particles. This cacao paste is subsequently pressed until it separates into cacao butter and a cacao “cake” which is then ground to produce cacao powder.Qualities: Cacao powder has the lowest fat content compared to all other cacao products.
